Had a phone call today by a service driver who has just got a warning for not picking a passenger up at a bus stop even though the passenger didnt signal properly to him he wanted the driver to stop and pick up all the passenger did was walk to edge of the kerb but didnt put his hand out ect and the company says the passenger showed intent that he wanted the bus to stop by walking forward and that it is pcv law that aslong as a passenger shows intent the bus must stop ,Iam asking you guys if you can point me to this rule as we have looked for it but the manager says it is law

When i was on service i used to stop at all stops on my routes which all took in glasgow city centre so it was very busy and no i never managed to run on time but these is the breaks. As far as i am concerned anyone at a bus stop is an intending passenger.

Well errr, I used to think it was stick your arm it to get the bus but it appears its if they intend to get on then you have to stop, now i dont know if its just a company rule that has spread allover but im in doubt, alot dont actually move at all but still want it.

In this area Iv never seen anyone stick there arm out for a bus, I know in the cities you do, but I don't think I would either. I'd just stand at stop or sit in the see through shelter. :dunno:

We used to get disiplined in a serious way in glasgow for leaving any intending passengers, according to the powers that be any passenger at a stop is an intending passenger.Even if you where running full you had to radio the control room to inform them that you have to miss stops.:nono:

This reminds me of when i used to get the bus to College

Same driver each morning, and same stop i went to.

Eventually toned down my thumbs up for him as he knew me and then one day he drove past me.

I made a complaint but was fobbed off

When I catch a bus I always stick my hand out.

In Leeds (with the exception of perhaps the free city bus) if you don't clearly signal that you want the bus most of the drivers will probably just drive straight past you. This is especially true if there is already a bus at the stop as some drivers won't slow down or stop to see if anyone wants that bus, they will just drive on!

I have even seen a Driver tell a passenger off for waiting at the wrong place at the shelter. It was a open shelter with a sign on the roof at the futherst end and passenger was stood at other end a put hand out. When passenger got on Driver said he should have been waiting at end where the sign was.

Up here, its rare to see anyone stick their arm out for one of our (city) buses, but they nearly always will for a 'country' (Stagecoach) bus. Usually of there's someone at the stop, I'll stop, but if they carry on smoking their cigarette, step back, keep talking on their phone, or whatever, I take that as a sign they Don't want the bus. Equally irritating, though, are the ones who just stand there, let you pull up, open your doors, then just stand there and stare at you. Would it hurt, just to give a small sign to the driver that he doesn't need to stop? (...and as for the ones who just lurk behind you, no bell, no "next stop please" when they want to get off... :protest: )

There is no such law, but it is common sense for any Professional Driver on service work to look out for intending passengers, especially at Bus Stops - if in doubt, stop - simples!

I remember when i was your and first used a bus and didnt realise that you had to signal to the driver that you want to get on that bus.

I thought they just stopped at every stop. :dunno:

For me, as the driver, the passenger must move towards the bus as it pulls or draws closer. Leaning against the wall will insinuate that it's not wanted. Making eye contact with the driver is also a good way to determine whether they want to stop.

I wont stop if they dont signal for it.

The intending passenger should at least acknowledge the presence of the bus .We are not all mind readers. Some bus stops are for more than one service, its fair enough to say if its not your bus ignore it ,but if you want it to stop then animate yourself in some way.
