I'm interested to know what areas of the UK have bays for on street coach parking bays (either free or charging) and how they are marked out on the road?

We are looking to set out similar bays for coaches, a clearway or bus stand is not legally valid.

If you go to London, they've got bays marked out on the Embankment and in Park Lane, among other places. Maybe if you ask the highways department in Westminster or TfL, they can tell you the exact sizes they use. There are also bays in Oxford opposite the Ashmolean museum outside the theatre which seem to meet the norm.

Generally, they're wide enough for a full width coach (About 2.5metres.) and should be long enough that a full length (15metre, nowadays) coach can swing out without shunting, so not too far short of 16.5 metres long. Some bays are exactly 15 metres long, but are separated by a 3 or 4 metre long area where no parking is permitted, marked by a double yellow line.

If it's on a private road, that's all you need to worry about, if it's a public highway, you'll obviously need permission from your local highways department, who will know the rules, and maybe planning permission.

Bye!

John.

Thanks, I'm aware about the bays opposite the Ashmolean Museum, its those that are currently marked as bus stands, but are not legally enforceable properly as the signs do not match the road markings. Bus stands normally apply to local service buses only and have a shorter time limit.

Given the helpful feedback above, we will be looking into changing the road markings to the parking bays like those in Edinburgh, and where we can provide more in central Oxford.
